Wear Minimization for Cuckoo Hashing: How Not to Throw a Lot of Eggs into One Basket

چکیده
We study wear-leveling techniques for cuckoo hashing, showing that it is possible to achieve a memory wear bound of log logn + O(1) after the insertion of n items into a table of sizeCn for a suitable constantC using cuckoo hashing. Moreover, we study our cuckoo hashing method empirically, showing that it significantly improves on the memory wear performance for classic cuckoo hashing and linear probing in practice. “I did throw a lot of eggs into one basket, as you do in your teenage years...”

On risks of using a high performance hashing scheme with common universal classes
The contribution of this thesis is a mathematical analysis a high performance hashing scheme called cuckoo hashing when combined with two very simple and efficient classes of functions that we refer to as the multiplicative class and the linear class, respectively. We prove that cuckoo hashing tends to work badly with these classes. In order to show this, we investigate how the inner structure ...
متن کاملReed warblers guard against cuckoos and cuckoldry
Previous studies have shown that reed warblers, Acrocephalus scirpaceus, are more likely to reject a cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, egg if they have seen a cuckoo at their nest. This suggests that they would benefit from watching out for cuckoos. We tested whether presentations of a cuckoo mount near the nest (to simulate nest inspection) led to increased nest attendance by the warblers. Cuckoo prese...
متن کاملNotes about d-cuckoo hashing
We show an upper bound for the minimal size set of keys which cannot be inserted into a d-cuckoo hashing table independently of the hashing functions and the insertion algorithm. We also discuss the probability for a successful insertion into such a hash table.
متن کاملIs egg-damaging behavior by great spotted cuckoos an accident or an adaptation?
Adult great spotted cuckoos Clamator glandarius damage the eggs of their magpie Pica pica host without removing them from the nest or eating them but by producing the death of the embryo. Observations as well as experiments were used to test several predictions of two different possibilities: great spotted cuckoo egg-damaging behavior is a parasitic tactic resulting from a direct selection proc...
متن کاملAttractive blue-green egg coloration and cuckoo-host coevolution
Recent evidence suggests that blue-green coloration of bird eggshells may be related to female and/or egg phenotypic quality, and that such colour may affect parental effort and therefore the nutritional environment of developing nestlings. Here we suggest that these relationships and the signal function of eggshell coloration would affect the outcome of coevolution between avian brood parasite...
